The New York Times article that landed on late Saturday evening was the basis of the conversation between Desiree and Joe on this episode of The Bella Buzz podcast. There are so many juicy angles to this story that we go down a variety of roads ranging from black hat seo to content farms, to brand signals impacting the search results pages.

A little background first. The New York Times published a story titled The Dirty Little Secrets of Search in which they uncovered numerous web sites that were linking JC Penney for lucrative keywords. The web sites in question had no relevance to the keywords they were linking, everything from nuclear.engineeringaddict.com to bulgariapropertyportal.com could find you a little link to words like “Evening Gowns” or “Bedding”, things that would put JC Penney on top of the rankings.  The length of time that this has been happening is unclear, but it was certainly taking place throughout the profitable 4th Quarter holiday period, and certainly had an impact on the revenues for the company.

On this episode of The Bella Buzz podcast, Desiree and Joe talk about the basics of affiliate marketing with the Co-Founder of Affiliate Summit Shawn Collins.  We take a look at the strategy from the point of view of a merchant/advertiser as well as how affiliates would approach the various programs and opportunities that are available.

Shawn and his business partner Missy Ward have established a global reputation by developing the preeminent bi-annual conference in the industry.  They have also diversified into additional ventures such as FeedFront Magazine, a vast YouTube Channel and a textbook publishing business at Velocity NYC. Shawn can be found blogging on a regular basis at his AffiliateTip site.  You can also listen to his weekly podcast Affiliate Thing with Lisa Picarille on his podcasting network called GeekCast.fm.

We begin by letting Shawn define what affiliate marketing is all about, introducing us to the concept of performance based compensation and ultimately what it would take for a small or medium sized business to establish a program.

We are very excited to bring you this Bella Buzz podcast conversation with Al Meyers.  Al is a very inspiring entrepreneur with great insights into the changing face of technology, education and social change.  It was our great fortune that Desiree connected with Al at the event that he initiated in Atlanta called TEDxPeachtree.

TEDxPeachtree | Fluid Media IncWe begin the conversation by discussing how Al’s experience at theTED Conference in 2008, would eventually lead to the events that he developed for Atlanta in 2009 and 2010.   The founders of the global TED conference had a vision to promote their brand through local events and the distribution of mobile apps. This vision has allowed numerous people to dialog and connect globally about revolutionary ideas.  In their words “Ideas worth Spreading.”

Al’s vision for Atlanta reflects the belief that we spoke about on our previous episode, in which we believe that the city has a great opportunity to embrace new forms of communication and to develop a foundation of forward thinkers.   He built his own Tribe of volunteers to help bootstrap TEDx.

Visit the list of presenters who addressed the group at this year’s event and follow the information at theTEDxPeachtree.com blog to find out when the videos from the event will be made available on line.  If you would like to view the presentations from the 2009 conference, the videos are available on You Tube at TEDxPeachtree.

How to Make Money with Social Media | The Bella Buzz.comI am the co-host of a weekly podcast called The Bella Buzz with the CEO of Bella Web Design, Desiree Scales. We have good conversations about topics related to online marketing. Thought I would also post the programs here for the Overflow audience. This is episode 58.

On the latest edition of The Bella Buzz podcast, we are excited to speak with Jamie Turner, who is the Chief Content Officer for the 60 Second Marketer.  He is also the author of a new book called How to Make Money with Social Media: An Insider’s Guide on Using New and Emerging Media to Grow Your Business.  The book is published by The Financial Times Press.

As a kickoff to Social Media month and specifically the events that will be taking place around Atlanta in November, Jamie agreed to appear on the podcast with Desiree and Joe to give us some of his insights into the world of social media marketing.  Jamie deals with some very big brands and guides them through this new media world.

To get a book about social media published, the co-authors had to anticipate where the market would be when the book came out.  There is a significant challenge for traditional publishing when the topic is dynamic and continuously evolving.

Jamie reminds us that we have to invest time and personnel costs in social media in order to move the ball forward. Although the tools might be free or inexpensive, the investment can be at least a full-time person devoted to managing the channels.

One of his favorite subjects with social media is Measurement.  He categorizes them in three ways Quantitative, Qualitative and ROI.

  • Qualitative measurements are all of the data that comes from traffic analysis such as visits, actions, and conversions.
  • Quantitative is an emotional analysis regarding the brand.  We touched on this developing subject an interview with Kim Schott.
  • Finally, what is the ROI of the social media effort.

The pivotal formula that can be derived from this type of analysis is Customer Lifetime Value. How much value does a typical customer generate over their lifetime, and therefore, what is the acquisition cost that allows for generating profit?  Or flipped another way, how many customers do you need to acquire for social media spending to be worthwhile.

We thank Jamie for taking his time to appear on the podcast.  You can check out his insights at the 60 Second Marketer Blog and if you pick up a copy of his book, be sure to let him know you heard him on The Bella Buzz.

If you are in Atlanta, be sure to attend Desiree’s Social Media for Entrepreneurs 101 session on November 9, 2010.

On this episode of The Bella Buzz Podcast, Desiree and Joe explore the social media space through the lens of pop culture, and the recently released movie The Social Network.

The movie is the semi-factual account of the creation of Facebook. We are presented with Mark Zuckerberg’s tale from his days as a student at Harvard, his motivation for making a name for himself as a hacker and coder on campus, through the launch of the site. Throughout the narrative we are also presented with the depositions from two lawsuits, that the company and Zuckerberg had to endure.

We really don’t need to go into the details of the script on this podcast, full details can be found on it’s IMDB page.  However, there were some lessons that we were able to glean from our viewing.

The lessons were mostly along the lines of maintaining a singular focus on achieving your objectives.  It’s hard to know when you “have a marlin” but when you do recognize it, do everything in your power to land it.  Never go off looking to get the little fish.  There is something that is very exciting in the entrepreneurial spirit that many of the startups around the country demonstrate on a daily basis.  This film depicts it very well.

When once there was an American Dream to earn a living, put a roof over our heads and provide for the future.  Today’s depiction of the american dream is to build something that changes the world.  Facebook has obviously had a tremendous impact, globally, on the way in which we connect, communicate and establish relationships.
